Project Skyway: revolutionising drone operations in the UK
The world's first drone superhighway, connecting the midlands to the southeast of England.
The challenge
The challenge was to create a safe and efficient airspace for drones to operate beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS). The project addressed noise, crashes, and privacy concerns while ensuring the infrastructure could support high-speed deliveries and emergency responses.
The solution
Project Skyway, developed by Altitude Angel and supported by a £5 million investment from BT, aims to establish a 165-mile-long drone superhighway. This innovative project leverages advanced technology to enable BVLOS drone operations, ensuring safety and efficiency. The project includes comprehensive measures to address public concerns and regulatory requirements.
We supported the project with:
- stakeholder engagement with local communities and key stakeholders
- regulatory support - assisting in navigating regulatory requirements and ensuring compliance with local and national aviation laws
- public engagement - facilitating communication between the project team and the public to ensure transparency and build trust in the new technology
- technical expertise in successfully delivering drone projects
The results
The project established the world's first drone airway in England, setting a precedent for future drone projects globally. The superhighway enhances capabilities for high-speed deliveries and emergency responses, significantly improving logistics and healthcare services.
Significant investment from BT and support from various stakeholders, including local councils and tech companies, have bolstered the project's infrastructure and operational capabilities. We conducted extensive public engagement and stakeholder consultations to address:
- concerns about privacy
- noise
- safety
- ensuring community support
- regulatory compliance
The project has led to advancements in drone technology, including the development of ARROW® towers equipped with sensors to monitor airspace and ensure safe drone operations.
